How Netflix changed the game

Netflix has disrupted the cable TV industry, leading a shift to internet entertainment much like TV replaced radio in the 1950s. How has the platform been able to lead this significant shift? By simply catering to the needs of their customers and offering them an optimised experience. Let’s explore these a little more.

On demand content

Nowadays, on demand content isn’t so innovating anymore. In fact, we expect to have access to whatever we want, whenever we want. But, depending on when you were born, you might remember the time when you’d sit down every Saturday at 8pm to watch your favourite show. In those days, people didn’t decide when they would watch something, they would take time out of their days to sit down and watch a show whenever the broadcaster decided to air it. Over time, consumers’ product control increased, and with that their need to stay up-to date with their desired content on demand.

An optimised experience

Much like how people want to have on-demand access, they also want ease of access. Netflix provides this in a great way. What do you see when you open Netflix? Recommendations. Yes, we might want to decide what, when, and where we consume content, but we also want it to be easy. Netflix’ recommendation system gives you ideas on which shows you would like to watch, taking the hard work of filtering through hundreds of shows and movies out of the equation. Of course, if wish to look for something else you can browse their library based on genre, but even this is designed to make your life easier.

Of course there is much more to say about Netflix, but we’ll keep it short for now. You know, so that you can get back to binge-watching your favourite shows.
