Digital nomads work remotely – meaning they are not bound to an office, because they use the internet to work from wherever and whenever they want to. This gives them the opportunity to travel the world like true nomads from back in the day.

So why would one want to become a digital? Well, there are a lot of reasons to becoming a digital nomad, but one of the most common reasons is the desire for freedom. Rather than choosing a career path and then building a lifestyle around that, you get to create a lifestyle you want and then built the career to fit. Traveling everywhere you want to go and deciding for yourself when you want to work is …sounds like a dream right? You might be thinking: “that sounds awesome!”, but I don’t necessarily want to give up my house and leave my country for a long period of time. Well good news! Being a digital nomad doesn’t mean that it is necessary to hop around all the time. It gives you the freedom to work remotely, so you get to choose for yourself when you want travel. If you want, you can work from home most time of the year.

What jobs can you do as a digital nomad?

Not only is being a digital nomad becoming more of a trend but so are remote jobs for companies. The outbreak of Covid-19 has forced many businesses to switch to the remote work model, even those that never planned on making such change. Working from home (or another continent) has never been easier. From a company’s perspective, it is cheaper to employ a freelancer than hire a full time employee. They no longer have to pay for offices, parking, cleaning and other amenities. Digital nomad jobs include copywriting, web design, video editing, social media management, programming and many more.

Becoming a digital nomad is not for everyone

Of course the life of a digital nomad doesn’t only revolve around adventure, palm trees and coconuts. It also requires a lot of planning and self-control. Especially when you first start out it is important to establish a routine that forces you to work. It is vital that you have good organisational skills, because you will be responsible for your own schedule working times, breaks, payments, taxes and everything else. If you get in the habit of thinking you can do what you want, when you want to, you might end up losing your job of not earning enough money to continue.
