Over the past few years the use of social media has increased a lot, so much so that it has now turned into an actual profession. Companies now often hire “online content creators” who are in charge of their social media. However, since social media is so broad, there are several fields in which you can build your profession:
Marketing
Marketing on social media is much different to traditional marketing, it requires a very good understanding of the way each different social media platform works. You need to be able to understand the different behaviours on social media and what affects those behaviours. There are various ways to promote products as well such as paid advertisements or using influencers. This is something you need to think about when stepping into this part of social media.
Customer Service
One tool which social media also can be used for, is customer service. Most of your customers will probably be online and thus it is a good idea for your company to be there as well and answer the questions of your customers. Customer service can also be used as a general way of interacting with your customers even when there are no questions or complaints. An example of good online customer service can be seen from Netflix. Netflix has an online chat available for whenever you have questions and since the responders are actual humans and not robots it creates some funny conversations.

Data Analysis
There is a lot of data to be analysed online. This comes from previously discovered findings or from the content you create at that moment. This data has to be analysed in order to improve on further projects and to find out if you need to target other parts of your audience. Since there is a lot of data it is advised for a company to find someone separate to do this for them.
Content Creation
This might be one of the most important factors within the social media world. Without content, there is no social media. There are many different types of content for social media from simple pictures to detailed animations. However, not all content works for each platform and brand. Someone who is able to recognise these differences and act accordingly would thrive in this part of social media.
Even if you are specialised in one of these fields there is the important factor of planning. Being able to plan your content ahead of time and according to current events going on is maybe even one of the most important parts of participating in social media marketing. Knowing when it is the best time to post or when important celebrations are held can enhance the experience of your followers and gain you more credibility as a social media account.
Social media is definitely here to stay and will only become more and more prominent in our lives. If you want to pursue a career in this world it might be smart to think about what side of social media you want to specialise in.
